The subject, the pairing of a foolish old man and a youthful beauty was very popular in sixteenth-century art, affording as it did the opportunity to present a lascivious image under the guise of a morality lesson. In this copy after a version by Cranach the Elder the couple initially appear to reciprocate each other’s gentle embrace. However, a second glance reveals it is highly charged with eroticism. The lewd old man is shown fondling the young woman’s breast while she removes money from his purse.
