This panel illustrates the story of Mary and Martha as told in the Bible (Luke 10:38-42). Christ, travelling with his disciples, is welcomed into the house of Martha and her sister, Mary. In the foreground Mary is shown sitting reading, while listening to Christ’s teachings, whereas her sister Martha stands with kindling in her apron ready to continue with the housekeeping. A contemporary German landscape is visible through the widows and three of the disciples are shown at a table in the room behind.
