Painting on wood

Thematically, the depiction corresponds to the well-known versions of the ‘Ill-matched Pair’: A young woman looks affectionately at the old man while taking coins from his purse. He is clearly distracted by an emotional turmoil, which he shares with us by looking out of the painting, and therefore does not notice the theft. In its present state only the heads, the bust of the young woman and three hands are visible against a dark background. The remaining surface is overlaid with mother-of-pearl overlay. This application can be traced back to 1858 but might be earlier.
