Research History / Discussion

According to [Auct. Cat. 1934] Friedländer wrote an expertise on this painting and its companion piece (a depiction of P. Melanchthon), stating he considered both paintings to be 'genuine and well preserved'.

An insignia in this form has not been found on any other paintings attributed to the Cranach workshop. It cannot be confirmed from looking at the illustration whether this is a later addition and whether this painting was created in Cranach's workshop.
