Lucas Cranach the Elder shows Judith triumphant after she has decapitated the enemy general that besieged her city with his own sword. The artist effectively contrasts the heroine's calm, steadfast gaze with Holofernes' agonized features. Cranach underscores the dramatic tension pervading the painting by the juxtaposition of the exposed, severed neck with Judith's exquisitely detailed dress and jewelry, as well as by the way her fingers delicately twine through her victim's curly hair. The multiple slits in her sleeves and gloves emphasize the actions of cutting and slicing.
