Research History / Discussion

According to Nietzki until 1861 there was a Latin insciption at the bottom of the painting that read as follows: 'Pietate erga Lutherum et Parentem Margaritae primae Conjugis Nob. Georgii â Kunheim ex secundo Conjugo Susceptus Erhard â Kunheim posuit. Aetatis 23.'

Conservation History

Date1860 - 1861

At the instigation of the President of the High Church Council in Berlin, who had visited the church in Mühlhausen in 1858, this painting and a portrait of Luther were taken to the Academy of Fine Arts, Königsberg for restoration. The director, Ludwig Rosenfelder, identified it as a work by Cranach the Younger. The paintings were then sent to Berlin in 1860 where they were restored in the museum and returned to Mühlhausen in 1861.
