The painting shows a half-length portrait of Ulrich, Duke of Württemberg against a neutral blue background, facing to his right. He is wearing a black tunic with puffed sleeves over a white pleated shirt with a high collar and two decorative bands of pearls. A feathered black beret with a delicate, ornate wreath of pearls is positioned at an angle on his head. Two linked chains hang around his neck and his hands are folded in front of him.

Research History / Discussion

These paintings [the seven portraits from Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha] were without doubt originally conceived as a series. This theory is supported by various visual clues, including their similar dimensions and uniform backgrounds. In addition all the sitters are shown as half-length figures in three quarter profile with their hands positioned in front of their bodies. Six of the portraits are signed with the monogram IS. The series was probably created about 1560.
