This panel depicts a scene from Mark 10:13-16 where Jesus blesses the children. This subject became popular after the rise of the Protestant Church in the 16th century, as it reflected the theological standpoint. The Protestant Church employed it to defend baptism of infants and illustrate its interpretation of salvation, which did not reside in knowledge or merits. Even a fragile baby could receive God’s love and care. The artist depicts the innocence and trust of the children by detailing babies pulling at Jesus' hair or clutching their mothers’ clothes. Jesus responds by holding a baby close to his cheek, while reaching out with his other hand to bless another child.
