John H. W. Stuckenberg Estate, 1898 (copy of will in Gettysburg College Special Collection manuscript collection MS-093 John H. W. Stuckenberg Papers)
on his death in 1903, all of his possessions went to his wife, Mary Gingrich Stuckenberg who lent the portrait to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1915
on her death ownership of the painting came to the Gettyburg College
in 1981 it entered the college collection in accordance with Stuckenberg’s wishes
