  • John H. W. Stuckenberg Estate, 1898 (copy of will in Gettysburg College Special Collection manuscript collection MS-093 John H. W. Stuckenberg Papers)
  • on his death in 1903, all of his possessions went to his wife, Mary Gingrich Stuckenberg who lent the portrait to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1915
  • on her death ownership of the painting came to the Gettyburg College
  • in 1981 it entered the college collection in accordance with Stuckenberg’s wishes

Our 1547 work was based on the 1539 original by Lucas Cranach; and is attributed to the Cranach Workshop during the era when Lucas Cranach the Younger was the director of the workshop.
