The painting shows the Virgin seated as a half-length figure, facing left in front of a black backdrop. She is wearing a green dress with white puffed sleeves and a red coat with gold trimming. The naked infant Christ stands on her lap and has picked a grape from the bunch held by the Virgin. Both look out at the viewer.

Research History / Discussion

Could possibly be FR388A (Lucerne, fine Art Co. (1927), last recorded in New York, Gallery Reinhardt).

The description by Friedländer and Rosenberg fits, but the dimensions are smaller unless inches and centimetres were confused. If this is the case then the size is also the same.

Support

'The panel is executed on a piece of thinned hardwood, possibly poplar, the grain of which runs in a vertical direction. It appears that the panel consists of two planks. The join is visible at 4.5” from the right edge.’

Ground and Imprimatura

‘The panel is primed with an evenly, smoothly applied ground layer, white in color.’

Paint Layers and Gilding

‘The design layer is characteristic of an oil bound medium of a thinned, rich paste consistency. Only very slight areas of texture are visible in the paint film.’
