The painting shows King Herod seated at the right end of a table with a white tablecloth. His wife and other members of the court are also shown around the table. A servant carries in a tray with fruit. Herod recoils at the awful sight that his daughter, who standing in front of the table, offers him. On another tray she presents him and the viewer with the decapitated head of John the Baptist.
