This fragment is part of a larger panel depicting an animated court hunt scene and may have been commissioned by the rulers of Saxony. The various running animals and armed noblemen seen here hint at the original complexity of the composition – In the foreground a stag is brought to the ground by a hunter and his dogs, while behind this scene a pack of dogs attacks a bear. A river winds through the image and contributes to the dynamism.

Research History / Discussion

This panel is the largest of three known fragments of a hunting scene. Sadly it may have been destroyed during World War II. The other two fragments known to have survived are in Wartburg Castle [DE_BRD-WSE_DLM1] and a private collection.
