the painting came from Görlitz townhall
it is recorded in the collection of the first public library in Görlitz (die Milich'sche Bibliothek) from the mid 17th century. This also housed a wunderkammer.
in 1873 the painting was transferred to the newly founded municipal museum (Städtischen Museums für Alterthum und Kunst), the predecessor of the present institution.
