Seated at a table an almost toothless old woman caresses the beard of a young man, while giving him a moneybag. A pretty young woman sits at the other end of the table and offers him a glass. The subject of 'The Ill-matched Pair' urging viewers to control their desires was very popular in the 16th century.

Research History / Discussion

During conservation treatment [1850] Heinrich Krüppel recorded a monogram, which has since disappeared without a trace.[1]

[1] A monogrammist BP with an anchor or BVP can neither be found in Nagler [Monogrammisten, Band I] nor Thieme/Becker [Band 37, Meister mit Notnamen und Monogrammisten, 1950]. However it cannot be excluded that Heinrich Krüppel erroneously assigned the monogram to the wrong painting when compiling the inventory. bei der Erstellung seines Verzeichnisses geirrt und das Monogramm dem falschen Bild zugeordnet hat.

Condition Reports

Date2018

Support:

  • at the top and bottom, c. 10 cm from each edge, grooved pine wood battens were inserted into the panel. The battens were planed flush with the panel at a later stage. This treatment damaged the panel in one place. Past woodworm damage is also visible, open worm channels and exit holes are located for the greater part at the edges of the panel. This has damaged these areas and caused losses. The reverse was stained or toned reddish brown.

Paint layers:

  • various tiny point retouches, particularly in the areas along the edge of the panel damaged by woodworm.

Varnish:

  • repeated application of a glossy resin varnish
