DESCRIPTION

Tools/Materials:

- fluid, black medium and brush; the initial design may have been fixed employing a dry drawing material, dark chalk?

Type/Ductus:

- freehand underdrawing (barely visible)

- delicate, fine lines (chalk); broader lines (brush)

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; lines delineate contours and describe the facial features; no representation of volume

Deviations:

- minor alterations made during the painting process to clearly define form

- panel warped, 3 boards, vertical grain

- widths of the boards from right to left: 8.2 cm (top) 9.3 cm (bottom), 28.6 cm (top) 27.4 cm (bottom), 19.3 cm (top) 18.8 cm (bottom)

- the edges on the reverse of the panel exhibit a bevel 1 cm in width, which is lacking at the top (panel slightly cut)

- 3 knotholes

- horizontal plane traces

Ground and Imprimatura

- a barbe is visible along the bottom and right edges

A fir wood (?) addition with the grain running horizontally was added to the top of the panel: width from left to right 3-5 cm. It has caused splits in the original panel. It was attached before 1897. [Cat. Budapest 1897]
