Half-length portrait of a young woman praying. She wears a black dress and a dutch bonnet and is depicted in three-quarters profile, facing left. Reverse: St Catherine (in Grisaille) [Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel, revised 2011]

Interpretation / History / Discussion:
'On the verso, in grisaille, a female saint. The panel was probably a wing of a triptych. A strip has been removed below, cutting off a part of the hands. The deal panel and the kerchief both bespeak a Netherlandish origin and suggest that the portrait may have been painted during Cranach’s visit to those parts in 1508'
