  • DESCRIPTION

    Tools/Materials:
    -fluid black pigmented medium, brush

    Type/Ductus:
    - freehand linear underdrawing
    - thin lines, sometimes broken

    Function:
    - binding for the final painted version; the lines delineate the contours and describe facial features; no representation of volume

    Deviations:
    - only minor alterations during the painted version to clearly define form

    INTERPRETATION

    Attribution:
    - Lucas Cranach the Elder

    Comments:
    - possibly after a preparatory drawing; the main lines may have been transferred from a pre-existing design
    - at times the broken lines suggest that the medium may have beaded off
