Cranach depicts Albrecht of Brandenburg wearing cardinal's vestments in the role of St Jerome occupying a comfortable study with beams on the ceiling, which is lit from the right by a crown glass window. The cardinal sits at a large desk with writing material, books and a crucifix on it. Behind him are shelves with books and pewter table-ware, the depiction of the sudarium as well as many utensils for daily use. In addition to the lion - included as his attribute - a family of pheasants and a pair of partridges are visible in the foreground; a small dog sits to the right of the cardinal.
