Research History / Discussion

The portrait was identified as the Margrave Johann von Brandenburg-Ansbach by the librarian of the Hofmuseum in Vienna, Dr. H. F. J. Zimmermann. A portrait of the Margrave Johann is also present on the margrave window in the chancel of the Sebalduskirche in Nuremberg from 1515.

[Wartburg-Stiftung, revised 2013]

The young margrave probably received the order of the Golden fleece thanks to his relationship with Emperor Charles V. In 1520 he returned to Germany for the coronation of Charles. The portrait must have been created during this time, which is also confirmed by the style of the painting. The connection with Cranach was established by Johann's brothers Albrecht and Kasimir [...]. [see CDA.AT_KHM_GG883 and DE_HAUMB_GG22]
