Research History / Discussion

The catalogue entry from 1999 states that Christ was depicted without wounds:

In all other known versions Christ's wounds are clearly shown. Only this work and a panel attributed to Lucas Cranach II (sold at Christie's, London, July 21, 1989, lot 84) lack any representation of the wounds of Christ's Passion.

However, at the auction in 2005 the same painting showed Christ presenting his wounds. Were these discovered when original paint was uncovered or are they a later addition? The catalogue entry did not comment on the changed appearance of the painting.
