This panel shows the seated Christ as the Man of Sorrows against a dark background, displaying the wounds of his Passion. The scourge and fasces - the instruments of his torture - are placed in a prominent position, diagonally across his lap. His head is crowned with thorns and emanates gold rays. Christ gazes beyond the pictorial space and appears to seek eye contact with the viewer.

  • Dendrochronology / identification of wood species

Support

Between 2017/2018 the panel was examined at the dendrolab in Thierhaupten (Bayerischen Landesamtes für Denkmalpflege).

The panel consists of five boards. Microscopy of samples identified the wood species of all five as lime wood (Tilia sp.). They are tangentially cut and appear to all be from the same tree trunk. Between 22 to 77 annual rings were identified. It is difficult to interpret these results because there isn't a complete reference for limewood. However, (viewed from left to right) Board I does seem to broadly correspond with a felling date in 1565. After seasoning the wood for a period of c. two years the painting could have been completed any time after 1567.
