A portrait of Dr. Christoph Scheurl (born in 1481), who was a jurist and professor at the University of Wittenberg (Rector from 1st May 1507). From 1512 he was active as the legal adviser to the Nuremberg Council. The 28 year old wears a greyish black damask robe over a

A portrait of Dr. Christoph Scheurl (born in 1481), who was a jurist and professor at the University of Wittenberg (Rector from 1st May 1507). From 1512 he was active as the legal adviser to the Nuremberg Council. The 28 year old wears a greyish black damask robe over a richly decorated shirt. He also wears a brown fur as well as a 'Fuggerhaube'. The background is moss green, and there is a signature and inscription in yellow paint.

Paint Layers and Gilding

'The X-radiographs of Johannes Cuspinian (1502/03), the Portrait of a Viennese Scholar (1503) , Christoph Scheurl (1509, fig. 159) and the Portrait of a Man with a Fur Hat (c.1510, fig. 14) demonstrate Cranach the Elder’s rapid and remarkably free technique. In the application of light flesh paint, brush strokes are clearly visible.[86] The faces were completed with a few glazes and highlights (fig. 156).'
