Valentinus von Rätien (died c. 475) was one of the first Bishops of Passau. Said to have healed an epileptic, he is regarded as the patron saint of suffers from epilepsy. Wearing canonical dress, the saint stands in the central axis of the panel; behind him juts the torso of

Wearing canonical dress, the saint stands in the central axis of the panel; behind him juts the torso of an epileptic. His face, twisted with the effects of his seizure, contrasts strongly with the composure of the praying donor.

Research History / Discussion

As is evident from the composition this panel was originally the left wing of a retable. The donor looks up to the central panel, which may have depicted a crucifixion scene. [see Exhib. Cat. Frankfurt 2007, 122, no. 4]

St Valentine is probably a reference to the donor's christian name and therefore the man could be Valentin Kardinger [...]

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- fluid, black medium, brush

Type/Ductus:

- freehand underdrawing

- Incisions in the ground indicate the contours of the gilding

Function:

- only partially binding for the final painted version; the main contours are delineated with broad lines while the details and facial features are defined with a few thin lines; no representation of volume with hatching-strokes, possible washes.

Deviations:

- corrections were made to forms during the painting process
