The sheet depicts one of 240 portrait minatures commissioned by the aristocrat and humanist Hieronymus Beck von Leopoldsdorf (1525-1596.

It could be a portrait of Magdalena Kopp, daughter of Hans Kopp, who became the second Mrs Leonhard Lackner after 1501 and died in 1555.

Provenance

  • after the death of Hieronymus Beck his library and the portrait minatures were transferred to the Court library of Archduke Matthias and probably then bound to create the present codex
  • in the 19th century this codex was in Franz Graf Lamberg's library in Pressburg
  • before 1900 it entered the Lamberg collection in Ottenstein castle, Lower Austria
  • from there it entered a private collection
  • 28.05.1973: auctioned at Hartung und Karl, Munich, No. 131
  • acquired by the Kunsthistorische Museum, Vienna[1]
