The infant Christ is shown at the centre of the composition, standing on the Virgin’s lap and bearing his weight on his right leg. He is gently supported by the seated female figures, framing him in a triangle. The Virgin is at the apex, her head tilted slightly to her right and her hair worn loose. St Catherine is shown on the left and is identified by the hilt of a sword, while the woman on the right is probably St Barbara. The figurative group is set in front of a curtain held at either corner by a cherub.

Research History / Discussion

This painting is probably a copy after a larger version by Cranach the Elder or workshop now in Erfurt Cathedral [DE_DSME_NONE-DSME001]. Three further copies or versions are known to exist. A version with similar dimensions to the panel in Erfurt is now in St Joseph's Servite Convent, Innsbruck [AT_SJI_NONE-SJI001] and two further smaller copies, one in a private collection [PRIVATE_NONE-P455] and the other in the National Gallery in Prague [CZ_NGP_DO4566].
