Research History / Discussion

On the basis of a record by an Erfurt chronicler from the beginning of the 18th century Overmann identified the donor of the panel as Georg Hirschbach the Elder. [Friedländer, Rosenberg 1979, 97, No. 134]

Numerous 20th century publications describe – sometimes in great detail – a signature at the top edge, for example [Friedländer, Rosenberg 1979, 97, No. 134]. However a technical examination of the panel in 2014 did not provide any indication for the (previous) existence of a signature. [Bornschein 2015, 118-119]

Numerous versions or copies after this composition exist e. g. in St Joseph's Servite Convent, Innsbruck [AT_SJI_NONE-SJI001], in an private collection [PRIVATE_NONE-P455] in the National Gallery in Prague [CZ_NGP_DO4566] and one attributed to Wolfgang Krodel the Elder in Schloss Eggenberg, Graz [AT_UMJ_101].
