Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

An underdrawing is not readily visible. However, in areas where the painted contours diverge slightly from the underdrawing fine lines (brush or stylus?) are discernible (e.g. the hands of the infant embracing charity; the left leg of the child on the right hand side, etc.). These findings indicate the existence of a carefully executed linear underdrawing that was closely followed during the painting process.
