The Virgin is at the centre of the image and supports the infant Christ, who stands on her lap. The child's gaze is directed at the viewer, while at the same time he gives St Catharine an apple. She kneels to his right and holds her attribute of the sword

The Virgin is at the centre of the image and supports the infant Christ, who stands on her lap. The child's gaze is directed at the viewer, while at the same time he gives St Catharine an apple. She kneels to his right and holds her attribute of the sword in her left hand. St Barbara kneels on the right with her hands folded in prayer. The heads of the two saints, together with the Virgin’s at the apex, create a triangle, which contributes to the balanced and calm composition. Putti hover in both upper corners holding the heavenly crown over the Virgin's head.
