St Barbara kneels on the left side of the painting with her hands held in an attitude of prayer and awaits the thrust of the executioner's sword. He stands behind her, holding her hair with his left hand and raising his right hand to strike with his sword. Further episodes

St Barbara kneels on the left side of the painting with her hands held in an attitude of prayer and awaits the thrust of the executioner's sword. He stands behind her, holding her hair with his left hand and raising his right hand to strike with his sword. Further episodes from the the legend of St Barbara are represented in the mountainous background. The composition is framed on the right by Barbara's tower, depicted here with the three windows and a door in which the chalice and host with Christ's monogram are visible. A tooled metal leaf application decorates the upper spandrels. The organic ornamentation is repeated within the painted image by a palm bearing fruit in the top left corner.
