This painting with a rounded top shows Christ as the Man of Sorrows seated on the open tomb with the Mother of God grieving at his right and the disciple St John in prayer at his left. It was originally the central panel of a winged altarpiece from the collegiate Church in Halle. The cardinal's coat of arms painted on the reverse confirms that it was commissioned by Albrecht of Brandenburg.
