Research History / Discussion

The Fürleger coat-of-arms is located at the top left. This family from Nuremberg was first mentioned in 1310, from 1495 family members were electable as councillers, by 1625 it had risen to the aristocratic ranks, but died out in the 18th century. The style of the work suggests it is from the so-called Dürer renaissance in the 17th century.

[Cat. Kronach 2014, 266-267, No. 101]

This portrait of a girl is very similar to a picture in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon [PT_MNAAL_1985]. the young women differ only in the colour of their respective bodices. The version in Kronach displays a coat-of-arms, while the version in Lisbon is represented with a wheel and a sword, the attributes of St Catherine.

A mirror inverted drawing in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Inv.-No. 1995.269) confirms, that the design of a female half-length figure with attributes can be traced back to Cranach and that it later assumed an independent identity as a portrait in the Kronach version.
