Saint Catherine is shown as a half-length figure against a neutral background. Although her body is turned to her left she maintains eye contact with the viewer. Her dress is simple and she is wearing three thin bands around her neck. A thin black band decorates her head and her ringlets frame her face. Her hands are clasped in front of her and her attribute - the wheel - is just visible behind her.

Research History / Discussion

The catalogue entry in [Exhib. Cat. Lisbon 2016, 51, no. 107] associates this painting with a silver point and ink wash drawing of the same subject attributed to Cranach's workshop in the Metropolitan Museum of Art [Inv. no.1995.269] from c. 1530.

This painting is very similar to a version in Kronach [DE_BNMM-FGK_R38]. The young women differ only in the colour of their respective bodices. The version in Kronach displays a coat-of-arms, while the version in Lisbon is represented with a wheel and a sword, the attributes of St Catherine.

A mirror inverted drawing in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Inv.-No. 1995.269) confirms, that the design of a female half-length figure with attributes can be traced back to Cranach and that it later assumed an independent identity as a portrait in the Kronach version.
