'The motif of the apple is a reference to the Original Sin committed by Adam and Eve. Just as Original Sin entered the world, because the forbidden fruit was plucked from the tree of knowledge and eaten, Jesus as the 'new Adam' will redeem us through his death on the cross. The motif of the curtain is frequently present in paintings of the Virgin from the Cranach workshop and his followers ([DE_BStGS_5566_FR228H] und [DE_BStGS_WAF737_FR-none]); it can be interpreted as a motif of glorification, and also as an artistic medium to heighten the three dimensionality of the figures. Like so many of Cranach's pictorial inventions this was repeated in numerous variants.'
