The painting depicts a half-length portrait of the five year old Prince Moritz against a dark background. He is wearing a red robe with volumious sleeves that are decorated with detached coloured strips. Under his left arm he holds a sword and rests his right hand on the hilt. The boy has blonde curly hair.
