The painting depicts a half-length portrait of the five year old Prince Moritz against a dark background. He is wearing a red robe with volumious sleeves that are decorated with detached coloured strips. Under his left arm he holds a sword and rests his right hand on the hilt. The boy has blonde curly hair.

Moritz like the portrait of his younger brother Severin, looks to the right. The portraits do not therefore appear to interact, and may have been part of a larger series.
