Two further versions of this vertical composition are known: a version of about the same dimensions, but without an inscription in a private collection [PRIVATE_NONE-P503] and a later, considerably larger copy now in a private collection [PRIVATE_NONE-P183] also bearing the inscription ‘FONTIS NYMPHA SACRI SOMNVM NE RVMPE QVIESCO.'

- the panel consists of a single plank

- the sides are slightly bevelled

- the panel may have been trimmed slightly on the left side

- along the join irregularities in the wood were corrected before painting with a chalk ground fill material, c. 20 cm in length

- marks from an axe and a block plane are visible on the reverse

Ground and Imprimatura

- the painted edge and the edge of the ground is visible both at the top and bottom of the panel

- the paint extends at times beyond this at the top

- c. 0.5 cm of bare wood is visible along the edge

- at the left and right the paint extends to the edge

- the x-radiograph shows a very soft relief with relatively little contrast

- paint dabbed on and strokes blended
