  • viewed from the front the panel has been thinned at the edges. At the top and bottom there are two depressions to fix the panel in a frame

  • the bottom left corner was re-worked at a later stage

  • indentations from mounting fixtures, a nail hole at the centre of the panel was filled

  • wax coating, shellac on the edges

  • no warping

  • the paint layer is slightly damaged in the bottom left corner. some small retouches, particularly in the farmer's robe and in the flesh paint.

  • in UV light it was established that the contours, the clothing etc. have been reinforced

  • generally in good condition

  • consolidation of the wood splinters on the reverse

  • the edges of the panel were treated with an application of shellac

  • varnish removal with isopropanol

  • retouching with resin paints

  • final varnish (dammar) and wax facing
