This small-scale half-length portrait shows the Elector Johann Friedrich I in half profile against a blue background, facing to his left. He wears a fur cape over an elaborate black tunic and a white undergarment with a repeat 'S' pattern embroidered on the collar. A ring on the index finger of his left hand, a chain around his neck and a hat complete his outfit.

Similar portraits of the sitter suggest it is probably one of a pair and may originally have been the companion piece to a representation of his wife, Sybille of Cleves.

Provenance

  • acquired by Johann Valentin Prehn (1749-1821) from the collection of the privy concillor Henrich Sebastian Hüsgen (1745–1807), which was auctioned in Frankfurt on 9. May 1808 (and following days): 'Friedrich der Weise, Kurfürst von Sachsen, Lucas Cranach pinxit auf Holz, 7¾ Zoll hoch, 5½ breit' (Auct. Cat. 1808 Hüsgen, 24, lot 5). It was added to Prehn's collection of small paintings (consisting of c. 800 works displayed in 32 wooden cabinets)
[Historisches Museum Frankfurt online, accessed 22.05.2023]
  • in 1829 his son, Ernst Friedrich Carl Prehn, withdrew the so-called 'Kleines Kabinett' from the auction of his father's collection
  • in 1839 the city of Frankfurt accepted the cabinet as a gift and transferred it to the Municiple library (Stadtbibliothek), where from 1842 it was on public display.
  • from 1867 Prehn's cabinet was then displayed in the 'Saalhof', together with other paintings in the municipal collection
  • in 1878 it entered the collection of the Historisches Museum Frankfurt (HMF)

Support

- a single board (vertical grain)

- on the reverse marks from a block and smoothing plane

- thin black glue-bound coating

Ground and Imprimatura

- white glue-bound ground applied in two layers

- lines scored into the ground around the edge of the panel

Underdrawing

There is an underdrawing executed with a soft (metal?) stylus.

Paint Layers and Gilding

First the contours and areas of shadow in the face were indicated with brown glazes and then the flesh paint was added using an admixture of vermilion, white and brown in increasingly paler applications; the beard was held in reserve. Highlights were mixed with white; shadows often only a pigmented black glaze; the beard, hair and fur were rendered with fine brown lines over a reddish-brown glaze; folds in the shirt were modulated with long white brushstrokes, ranging from transparent to opaque; shadows in grey; the decorative border of the neckline was initially laid in with vermilion, and the detail worked up in brown, as well as paint containing iron oxide red and lead tin yellow; then impasto pearls were added in white; the same method was employed for the chain; it was painted directly over the shirt, but was held in reserve in the black tunic, which was completed after the shirt; the pattern on the hat or muff (?) was applied freehand with transparent to opaque paint (brown, iron oxide red and lead tin yellow); the background is an admixture of azurite and white; finally tiny hairs of fur were added over the background paint.

Framing

- Prehn frame; reverse concealed by blue rag paper
