Technical studies

2018Technical examination / Scientific analysis

  • Dendrochronology / identification of wood species

Support

- beech wood

- all four edges are chamfered on the reverse, width of chamfer c. 1.6 cm

- the reverse exhibits an almost opaque black coating

- Dendrochronology: the following measurement were recorded for the single beech wood panel: 87 annual rings, 1519-1433. The panel is from the same tree as planks used for the following paintings:

DE_smbGG_589 (I,II,III); DE_KSVC_M416 (III); DE_BStGS_WAF167 (I, II, III); DE_KBSB_B60; DE_KBSB_B59; DE_SKK_0109; DE_SMG_SG17; DE_LmKKO_15-572 (I, III); DE_HLMD_GK73a; US_IMA_2000-344; DE_smbGG_564 (I, II, III); FIN_FNG_S-1994-224; F_MdLP_1180; DE_KSW_G6; US_PMA_739 (II); DE_SWK_6545; AT_KHM_GG883; DE_BStGS_6262 (II, IV); DE_BStGS_6264 (II, IV); US_artic_1938-310 (III); Martin Luther, Privatbesitz (I, II, III)

The youngest annual ring is from the year 1524. Generally with beech wood the entire section is used and only the bark is removed, therefore a felling date of 1524 can be estimated. The wood was then seasoned for at least two years and could have been used after 1526. (Klein 2016).

Ground and Imprimatura

- chalk ground

Condition Reports

Date2018

Support:

  • some old woodworm damage (inactive)

Paint layers:

  • various tiny point retouches

Varnish:

  • numerous applications of a glossy resin varnish. The painting was varnished while fixed in its frame. This caused a distinct difference in colour from green (edge) to a bluish hue (varnished surface), which was promoted by the fact that the edges were concealed behind the rebate of the frame.
