It is not quite so peaceful in our idyllic image. To protect his wife and children the father of the family has killed a lion with his club. Bleeding from the mouth and nose the lion dies a miserable death while looking severely at the viewer. Although he still has his mane he is only half the height of his victor, who has settled himself exhausted on a stone block. He supports his club on the block and rests his other hand on his knee. The young lady approaches holding a small boy by the hand and an infant in her arms, who stretches his hand out to his father. The composition is framed by a wall of foliage consisting of shrubs and trees. In the distance a landscape is visible with a river valley and mountains, one of which has a castle on the summit.

Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

The underdrawing of this rather damaged painting is obscured by the finely painted dark outlines, and this inhibits a reliable interpretation and evaluation.

  • Dendrochronology / identification of wood species

Support

Identification of wood species: beech wood

Plank I: 138 annual rings, 1520-1383

The youngest annual ring is from 1520.

The panel is from the same tree as the planks from the linked panels.

1990Technical examination / Scientific analysis

  • Infrared reflectography

Underdrawing

- the underdrawing is visible to the naked eye beneath the paint layers. It is executed with diluted ink and defines the contours of the figures. Not visible as discrete lines in the infrared reflectogram. However clear areas that have been held in reserve for figures are visible in the vegetation in the background, suggesting that work was delegated to specialists (painters of foliage, figures etc.)

[Cat. Donaueschingen 1990, 178]

1988Technical examination / Scientific analysis

  • Dendrochronology / identification of wood species

Support

- a single plank, 0.6 cm thick. The youngest of the 138 annual rings dates from 1520. Taking account of the average seansoning time for beech wood (c. two to seven years) the panel could not have been painted before 1522.
