Research History / Discussion

This type of portrait depicting Luther in a beret and gown was employed frequently between 1528 and 1532. The enormous influence it had is evident in the fact that the black gown became the prototype for a protestant minister’s attire. This portrait type was frequently part of a diptych, complemented on the right by a portrait of Katharina of Bora.
