Horizontal format. Christ as the Man of Sorrows sits against a dark background, flanked by the standing half-length figures of the Virgin and St John. Two small groups of angels have gathered in the upper corners of the painting.

The figure of Christ is emphasised by the pale flesh paint and his central position, which is slightly elevated, as well as his direct eye contact with the viewer. Both the stigmata and the blood flowing from it are clearly visible. The Virgin dries her tears on a piece of her headscarf, while St John's facial expression seems to reflect both sorrow and anger.
