St Catharine kneels at the centre of a group of figures in the foreground in front of a landscape with a river and houses. Flashes of lightning falling from the sky have destroyed the intended instrument of martyrdom. The executioner stands behind her and pulls his sword to decapitate her.

St Catharine kneels at the centre of a group of figures in the foreground in front of a landscape with a river and houses. Flashes of lightning falling from the sky have destroyed the intended instrument of martyrdom. The executioner stands behind her and pulls his sword to decapitate her. He is accompanied by further figures some of them on horseback. Among them are thought to be various historical figures such as Friedrich the Wise and others from the circle of the Wittenberg university. Around the saint there is chaotic confusion of numerous heads, representing the 4000 heathen who according to the legend were killed after the wheel was destroyed.
