Her arms are folded, she has dainty hands and a black hairband holds back her long blond wavy hair, which hangs loose. Her face is round with a pointed chin, she has almond-shaped dark eyes and looks in an expressive manner towards the viewer.

Research History / Discussion

The prototype for this painting (FR153) is dated 'about 1520' by Friedländer, Rosenberg 1979, 101, which excludes Magdalena Luther (born 1529) as a possible sitter.

[Görres, cda 2012]

'The original by Lucas Cranach the Elder, 1520, is in the Louvre and the sitter has been erroneously identified as Magdalena Luther. In 1520 Luther was still a monk. There are numerous engravings (mostly 18th and 19th century) after this painting, which bear the same erroneous title.'
