Provenance

In 1877 a collection of 80 oil paintings belonging to the Royal Building Inspector, Friedrich Loock was bequeathed to the city of Haldensleben. 48 painting were transferred to the municipal museum in 1939. After the war the other paintings that could be found were also acquired by the museum (with the exception of one painting in the town hall). Ultimately 66 works were listed in the inventory.

Research History / Discussion

The Crucifixion Triptych from 1540 also exhibits an underdrawing executed in a dry medium. Here, however, the contours were corrected during the painting process, whereas the Haldensleben underdrawing seem to have been binding for the final painted version. This may indicate that it is a workshop copy.
