DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- dry, drawing material, stylus

Type/Ductus:

- economic , precise underdrawing (only occasionally visible e. g. lines drawn with a pen/stylus along the arms and legs)

- delicate, fine lines

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; the lines define the main contours and describe facial features; no representation of volume with hatching strokes

Deviation:

- almost no corrections were made to forms during the painting process

Condition Reports

Date1990

Enlarged with addittions on three sides in the 19th century. At the right and left edges by about 2-3 cms, and at the top 16 cm. The original height of the panel was about 43 cm while the width was about 36 cm. The planks are horizontally aligned and the joins are retouched. On either side the new paint extends over the original, particularly over the tree. The original surface is damaged in some places. Generally darkened.
