The painting shows a man grabbing a woman by the arm. They are evidently having an argument. Beside them is a compact group of children and women some cowering fearfully on the ground. The reduction of the number of figures and the idiosyncrasy of the composition lends the panel

The painting shows a man grabbing a woman by the arm. They are evidently having an argument. Beside them is a compact group of children and women some cowering fearfully on the ground. The reduction of the number of figures and the idiosyncrasy of the composition lends the panel a unique character. In the past this prompted a misinterpretation of the image as a depiction of Adam and Eve after Cain killed his brother. By transferring the conflict to the couple it also recalls motifs that are found on the panel in a private collection in Moscow as well as a silverpoint drawing in Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin.

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- dry, drawing material, dark chalk; possibly some minor corrections with a brush (e. g. in the kneeling figure in the foreground at the left)

Type/Ductus:

- freehand, rough and yet detailed underdrawing

- thin to somewhat broader lines

Function:

- only roughly binding for the final painted version; lines define the main contours and describe facial features, no representation of volume with hatching-strokes

Deviations:

- numerous corrections were made to forms during the painting process; small changes
