Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- dry and fluid drawing material; brush and dark chalk (for the initial design)

Type/Ductus:

- relatively detailed and yet loose, freehand underdrawing; occasional searching lines; precise linear definition within the face

- thin to broader lines

Function:

- relatively binding for the painted version in the head only; the lines delineate the main contours and describe essential details and facial features; no representation of volume

Deviations:

- corrections were made during the painting process; as well as numerous small changes the position of the right arm was corrected in the underdrawing
