The painting shows a half-length portrait of the Lübeck merchant Hans Sonnenschein against a pale background. He is wearing a fur-trimmed cloak over a black gown that contrast with the white collar and the gloves. Two coats of arms are represented above the sitter in the semi-circular top of the panel.

On the reverse death is represented as a skeleton holding an hourglass in his hand and there is a banner with text above him.

The x-radiograph shows that the original composition was quite different and was changed by the artist when he completed this final version in 1534. The sitter, Hans Sonnenschein was originally facing to the left in three quarter profile. His head was considerably larger than in the present version and was positioned at the centre beneath the two coats of arms, that were also rendered in the initial version. The background was held in reserve here. The large beret was cropped either side. The merchant’s hands were shown, resting on the parapet and he held a small scroll in his right hand and a ring decorated the little finger of his left hand. The neck line was slightly lower […]
