The sitter is depicted as a half-length figure in three-quarter profile. He wears a black, slitted robe and a broad-rimmed black hat with feathers. In his right hand he holds a sword of which only the hilt is visible. On the index finger of his left hand he wears a signet ring with two golden rakes on a red background and the letters 'A V R' above. Behind him a light blue sky and an expansive landscape is visible.

Provenance

  • the collection of the Margrave of Baden
  • possibly originally from the collection of Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden-Baden and his wife Sibylla Augusta, but could also be from the collection of the Baden-Durlach family line and the same painting as that recorded in the inventory of Margrave Hofes of Basel 1688 under No. 136: "Ein Conterfät von einem Mann, mit einem Paretle, so einen Degen in beiden Händen hält." (A portrait of a man with a paretle holding a sword in both hands)

Research History / Discussion

'To Balthasar of Rechenbergck No. 268; to Rudolf of Rechenberg, who together with four other men was commissioned with the reformist visitation in the Albertine-Saxon Dukedom of Duke Heinrich in 1539: [Höss 1956, 390]. The man, whose signet ring shows two crossed rakes and the initials A V R, wears a wedding wreath over his beret (like No. 627 or FR244) and a sword with hunting gadgets on the side; there is a thin strip of landscape in the background (see Koepplin. Cuspinian, 81, Fn. 198).

Michaelson: «about 1535-37; attributed to the (workshop) in the catalogue; appears to be an autograph work ». Lauts: «apparently... autograph work [L. Cranachs the Elder] from the later 30s».

The attribution to Hans Cranach suggested here is only substantiated by the strikingly fluid, loosely wavy brushstrokes in the shirt and the peacocks feathers (comparable with the pattern of the shirt in No. 625 and the fluid rendering of the brocade pattern in No. 620; compare also the comments on Hans Cranach's style under No. 625). The shirt collar lacks vitality, but corresponds with Hans Cranach's style in the subtle gradation of texture to a tonal entity of parallel strokes.'
