The painting depicts a portrait of Erich Volkmar von Berlepsch in a black gown and a brown fur coat. The chains around his neck have pendants showing portraits of Maximillian II and Elector August. Berlepsch is holding his hat and gloves in his hands and his shadow is cast on the bluish-grey wall behind him. His coat-of-arms is represented in the top right corner.

Provenance

The paintings of Volckmar and Lucretia von Berlepsch were originally from the church of St Marien in Kleinurleben. The von Berlepsch family provided many of the decorative furnishings for the church. The paintings are presently on loan to the museum in Gotha
